Pro Athletes - Kathy Whitworth

Birthplace: Monahans, Texas

College: Odessa College

Kathy started playing golf at the age of 15. After graduation of High School, Kathy spent one year with the Wranglers at Odessa College. Although Kathy only spent one semester at Odessa, it was one well spent, as she won the individual National Championship. After her one semester with OC, Kathy turned pro. Just four years after turning pro, Kathy collected her first LPGA Tour victory. Following that year, Kathy would dominate the LPGA for the next ten year. In her fifth year Kathy won a total of eight tournaments. Kathy would be the leading money winner for the LPGA in eight of the next nine years, also becoming LPGA player of the year seven times. The Associated Press also named Kathy Woman Athlete of the Year twice in a row. Whitworth was also the first woman golfer to eclipse the million-dollar mark for lifetime earnings. Kathy’s 88 tour victories is a record for both the men and women U.S. tours. Kathy has since been elected in the LPGA Hall of Fame and also the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
